Barry Stoodley Company Profile

Barry Stoodley Pty Ltd was incorporated in South Australia in June 1980 with a total staff of 5. We operated out of a small leased workshop situated very close to our current premises. The company's main function was to provide the South Australian road transport industry with an alternative workshop for the professional fitting out of prime movers and chassis modifications. We also had the State franchise for a prominent Victorian body builder.

In 1982, we took control of Chassis Engineering and Equipment Sales, a similar business in a neighbouring suburb. Staff had grown to 17.

In 1983, we purchased Aluweld, a small builder of heavy truck bullbars.

In 1984, land was purchased at our current site in Regency Park and a new workshop was built to incorporate the three businesses. During this period, we began manufacturing specialised trailing equipment, including bottom dump trailers, machinery floats, dollies, and heavy livestock trailers. The majority of the equipment was for road train operation, and used in remote areas of New South Wales , the Northern Territory , and the Cooper Basin in South Australia .

In 1985, as a result of a contract between CSR Readymix and a major subcontractor, we began manufacturing our own aluminium tipping bodies, starting with an order for 23 rigid units.

In 1986, we began manufacturing steel tipping bodies, steel and aluminium tipping semitrailers and dog trailers.

In 1989, manufacture began of B-Double tipping combinations, incorporating a then unique sliding triaxle suspension on the A trailer.

In 1991, an order was received for 16 special skeletal road train semitrailers and six converter dollies from Titan Bulk Transport Pty Ltd, to service a new contract they had won with Western Mining Corporation Ltd.

In 1993, we produced our first road train side tipping semitrailer, to operate in the Northern Territory . Since then, many more have seen service with both rural councils and private operators in four states.

In 1995, we took over the operation of L M Transport Equipment, a long established South Australian commercial motor body builder.

Also in 1995, a property was purchased from Freighter Qld, at 69 Shettleston Street , Rocklea , Queensland , and a branch office and workshop facility were opened there.

In 1999, work was undertaken to expand the facilities in Regency Park to incorporate both of the South Australian branches in one facility. In early 2000, L M Transport Equipment was closed, and the staff and equipment were relocated to the current premises.

In 2001, the company became the South Australian agent for the David Brown Powauto range of hydraulic equipment when that company closed its branch office. The name Chassis Engineering and Equipment Sales was revived, and sold and serviced hydraulic equipment from the existing premises at 22 Pambula Street , Regency Park

In 2003, the Pambula Street office and workshop was closed, and Chassis Engineering and Equipment Sales moved their operations to 5 Wirriga Street , Regency Park .

In early 2005, the company acquired a Flow CNC waterjet cutting machine.

In mid 2006, the Chassis Engineering and Equipment Sales name was retired, and the Wirriga Street operation was brought under the Barry Stoodley Pty Ltd banner.

Current total staff in the three premises is approximately 70.
